October 2025 – The 1916-D Mercury Dime – A Tiny Coin with Huge Rarity

he 1916-D Mercury Dime is one of the most coveted U.S. coins of the 20th century. As the first year of the Winged Liberty Head (commonly called “Mercury”) design, 1916 saw production at all three mints—but Denver struck just 264,000 dimes, making the 1916-D the rarest and most valuable of the series.
Designed by Adolph A. Weinman, the coin features Liberty in a winged cap on the obverse, symbolizing freedom of thought. The reverse shows a fasces and olive branch—strength and peace. The design would become one of the most iconic in U.S. coinage.
Collectors must be cautious, as worn 1916 Philadelphia and San Francisco dimes are often passed off as Denver issues by adding a fake “D” mintmark. Authentication is critical, especially with prices starting around $1,000 in even Goodcondition and exceeding $15,000–$20,000 in higher grades.
Compact, elegant, and historically important, the 1916-D Mercury Dime stands as a must-have key date for any serious U.S. coin collection.
