What Do You Think of NGC’s New 10-Year Guarantee Limit?
NGC revised its coin certification guarantee on June 2, 2026. Under the updated policy, claims about a coin’s authenticity or grade must be submitted within ten years of its grading date. The change applies to coins graded on or after June 2, 2026; it does not retroactively impose the new limit on coins graded earlier. NGC says the guarantee period may be extended by submitting a coin for ReGrade. NGC’s guarantee
A grading service’s guarantee can be an important part of a collector’s confidence. A coin in a holder is easier to buy and sell, but the holder and grade are only as reassuring as the protections behind them. A ten-year window may seem ample to some collectors. Others may wonder why a certification’s backing should expire at all, especially when coins can change hands many times over decades.
The policy also raises practical questions. Will buyers pay less for an NGC-graded coin whose guarantee has expired? Will sellers and auction houses make the grading date more prominent? Could collectors become more cautious about older holders—or submit coins for regrading to extend coverage? And how much weight should a guarantee carry when the terms also set limits on remedies and require documentation such as proof of purchase?
The change may affect different collectors in different ways. Someone buying a recently graded coin may still have years of coverage, while a later buyer could inherit only the remaining time. For coins that are rarely sold, the limit might never come up. For high-value coins that change hands often, it could become part of the buying decision.
What happens next is uncertain. Will collectors respond by using NGC less, or will the company’s reputation and services continue to matter more? And will PCGS or other grading services adopt a similar time limit, or will they see an opportunity to emphasize their own guarantee policies? PCGS’s published guarantee describes its review process for coins believed to be overgraded or inauthentic; collectors should compare the current terms carefully rather than assume the policies are identical.
