August 2025: The 2000 “Cheerios” Sacagawea Dollar – A Modern Rarity with a Breakfast Twist

In 2000, General Mills partnered with the U.S. Mint to promote the new Sacagawea dollar by placing them in specially marked boxes of Cheerios. One in every 2,000 boxes contained a golden dollar, while others included a 2000-dated Lincoln cent. But some lucky recipients got more than they realized.
Roughly 5,500 of those Sacagawea dollars were struck with an enhanced reverse eagle tail feather detail—different from the standard circulation strike. These coins, now dubbed “Cheerios dollars,” weren’t identified as unique until years later, making them a hidden gem in many collections.
Today, authenticated Cheerios dollars can sell for $5,000–$10,000+, depending on condition.
What makes this coin fascinating isn’t just the value—it’s the blend of marketing, design variation, and chance discovery. It’s proof that even a trip down the cereal aisle might lead to one of modern numismatics’ most unexpected treasures.
