The Washington quarter is one of the most familiar coins in American history. Yet when it first appeared in 1932, it was intended to be a commemorative coin for one year only, honoring the 200th anniversary of George Washington’s birth. The public response was so positive that the design remained—and Washington has appeared on the quarter ever since.

The new quarter arrived during one of the most difficult economic periods in American history. The Great Depression had sharply reduced the need for new coinage. Banks already held large supplies of coins, businesses were struggling, and many Americans had little money to spend.

As a result, the Denver Mint produced only 436,800 Washington quarters in 1932. San Francisco made even fewer, while Philadelphia produced more than five million. Neither low-mintage western issue was intended to become a rarity; there simply was not much demand for quarters.

At the time, few people saved them. Most entered circulation and were spent in everyday commerce. By the 1950s and 1960s, as coin collecting grew in popularity, collectors discovered that the 1932-D and 1932-S were the difficult coins needed to complete a Washington quarter set. The 1932-D quickly became one of the best-known key dates in twentieth-century U.S. coinage.

The mintmark is easy to locate. Turn the coin over and look beneath the wreath, just above the letters in QUARTER DOLLAR. A small D identifies the Denver issue. Because the coin has been popular for so long, collectors should be cautious of altered pieces and should buy valuable examples from reputable sources.

The 1932-D Washington quarter tells a larger story than its mintage alone. It reflects a country in economic hardship, a design created for a single anniversary year, and the unexpected way an ordinary quarter became a prize for generations of collectors.

Collector’s Corner

Do not overlook the 1932-S while searching for a 1932-D. Both are key dates, and both deserve careful examination. As with many early Washington quarters, originality and honest circulation wear are often more important than a bright, heavily cleaned appearance.
