July 2026 – The Hunt Is On – The New 2026 “July 4” Privy Mark Quarter
Coin collectors across the country have a new reason to check their pocket change.
To celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, the United States Mint is releasing a special limited-edition 2026 Declaration of Independence Quarter featuring a unique “July 4” privy mark. Only 250,000 of these special quarters will be struck, making them one of the lowest-mintage modern circulating quarters ever intentionally released into circulation. (United States Mint)
Unlike most collectible coins, these quarters will not be sold directly by the Mint. Instead, they will be randomly mixed with regular 2026 Declaration of Independence quarters and distributed through banks and financial institutions across the United States. That means anyone could discover one in a roll of quarters, at the grocery store, or in everyday change. (United States Mint)
The special quarter features Thomas Jefferson on the obverse with the dual date 1776–2026, honoring the nation’s Semiquincentennial. The reverse depicts the Liberty Bell, a fitting symbol of American independence. The key difference is the distinctive “July 4” privy mark, which replaces the traditional mint mark found on standard circulation strikes. (United States Mint)
Privy marks have been used throughout numismatic history to commemorate special events or identify unique issues. Modern U.S. collectors may remember the popular 2020-W quarters that featured the V75 privy mark commemorating the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II. The new July 4 privy mark continues that tradition while celebrating one of the most significant anniversaries in American history. (Numismatic News)
Will these quarters become valuable? It’s too early to know. Their future worth will depend on how many are found and preserved, collector demand, and their condition. Regardless of future value, they represent an exciting opportunity to own a genuine piece of history that entered circulation during America’s 250th birthday celebration.
So before spending your next handful of change, take a closer look. You might just find one of only 250,000 special July 4 privy mark quarters—and become part of one of the biggest coin hunts in recent U.S. Mint history.
Collector’s Tip: Ask your local bank for rolls of 2026 quarters after the Fourth of July. Since the special coins are mixed into circulation at random, roll searching may be the best chance of finding one.
